I'd be happy to test your hypothesis by performing a controlled study. I already planned it out, and it's easy: We'll just go to a number of marathons and ask the winners if they are nice guys. If the majority says yes, then obviously we would find there's no correleation between being nice and finishing last.

Then we'd write our findings on a paper and become famous. Nice and famous.

Also, self-reporting is not very reliable. You might want a better test for niceness, like a personality test or something.

Besides, what about the winners who are not guys? You need to control for those, too.

Apart from these methodological problems, it's a fine plan. You should do it.
