ITT we test our internets! (9)

at least it's not dialup... and i guess i shouldn't expect anything near gigabit speeds in this post-apocalyptic wasteland.

I wouldn't trust speedtest farther than I can throw it. After having performed several very scientific studies, I can confidently say that my unbiased, normal download speed is about a tenth of what speedtest claims it to be. Apparently the ISPs put speedtest's connections on special priority. Furthermore, as soon as my connection hits a speedtest server, my connection speed overall markedly improves for an hour or so, resulting in download rates fully seven times normal (note this is still less than what speedtest claims).

I am currently using this to my advantage with a cronjob that requests a few kb from a speedtest server every 30 minutes so that I never leave the ``customer who is irritated with their speed and might just be about to switch to the other side of the local duopoly, so we'd better give them something within an order of magnitude of what they pay for'' pool.

You do realize that 1 Megabyte per second is 8 Megabits per second, right?
Steam, for example, measures download speed in Megabytes per second (MB). Speedtest measures in Megabits (Mb).

Yes. Working as a software engineer, I am quite aware of this fact.

shortly before running the test, i was downloading some things with bittorrent and seeing speeds around 4.5MB/s.
the ISP with a monopoly where my parents live does that sort of shitty thing, but apparently comcast in detroit just doesn't give a flying fuck about throttling.

Okay, just checking. No need to be defensive.
I'm a network engineer and many people, even intelligent ones, confuse the two.

Fair enough.

Interesting. I'm in a duopoly in a larger city than Detroit, but for some idiotic reason the other half only offers internet as a triple package, two thirds of which I don't need or want. I'd think such a large potential customer base would prompt better response, either from one side or the other.
